Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) said that police had been deployed to the Mexico-Guatemala border ahead of the arrival of a migrant caravan in order to offer protection, during a press conference in Mexico City on Tuesday. “We try to apply the law without violating human rights, which we have achieved even yesterday,” he said, adding that "our objectives are to defend] human rights, offer shelter and, although it seems contradictory, protection.”
On Monday a group of migrants crossed the border between Guatemala and Mexico through the Suchiate River. Clashes were reported between the National Guard and a group of migrants.
According to Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, some 2,400 people have entered the country through the southern border.
