Britain's royal family has been rocked by the surprise announcement from Prince Harry and his wife Meghan that they plan "to step back" from their roles and pursue a new path that will allow them to be financially independent.
Harry and Meghan's stunning announcement that they intend to become financially independent and to "balance" their time between the U.K. and North America underscores the couple's wish to forge a new path for royals in the modern world.
But what could that look like in reality? Celebrity director of Grazia UK Guy Pewsey explores the potential career paths open to the royal couple – and the possible complications they might face.
"I think it's very easy to say that we would like more privacy and I completely understand it," he says. "The problem is if they wish to go to red carpet premieres to release their new documentary series about mental health, or if they release a book or if they have a charity endeavour like she did last year that makes clothes for women who need to go into business, she will be showing up to these events and she will be giving speeches and she will be on the front pages. And that will serve a really positive purpose. But it does fly in the face slightly of this request for privacy."
As an actress and a human rights activist, the duchess was accustomed to media attention before her marriage, but she has made no secret of the fact that the transition to being a global celebrity and part of Britain's royal family was difficult. The royal couple particularly took issue with their treatment at the hands of the British tabloids.
The duchess said the pressure was aggravated by the fact that she went quickly from being a newlywed to being pregnant and then a new mother.
"The precedent is very difficult," says Pewsey. "The last time we had this was in the sort of Wallis Simpson days and they could just sort of sail away to Europe and kind of disappear after a while. But this is a different world and you will be spotted."
If Meghan decides to resume her acting career, producers will be queuing round the block to hire her, says Pewsey. But despite the high demand for film roles, he thinks it unlikely the Duchess would seek a career in Hollywood.
Instead, he thinks TV-led work more probable.
"I think the most likely concept in the sort of early stages in television would be seeing Meghan travel the world, meeting people in other countries, seeing what problems they have, casting light on charitable endeavours that she is backing or otherwise and just sort of seeing, casting a light on that and therefore pushing themselves as philanthropists."
Last year, Meghan also renewed the trademark on her retired lifestyle blog The Tig.
"I do think The Tig will come back," says Pewsey. "I don't want to call her the next Gwyneth Paltrow, but she could definitely turn The Tig into a Goop-level empire of lifestyle."
The world of fashion also beckons.
"She's very close to Claire Waight Keller, who did her wedding dress. She's very close to Stella McCartney, who did the wedding dress for the evening after the wedding. So she really knows all the right people who, first of all, are very chic and talented, but also work very well sustainably. And that is certainly something that she has expressed an interest in."
As for Harry, don't expect to see him seeking work in front of the camera.
Charity work could also provide another source of income.
