An asteroid explosion above Australia, which occurred in 2016, could have been in Earth’s orbit for a period of time in what is known as a temporarily captured orbiter or a minimoon. When we think of Earth’s moon, we imagine the bright white ball that helps to illuminate the night sky. However, the definition of a moon is a natural satellite that is captured by a planet’s gravitational pull. So when experts say the Earth has more than one moon, they do not necessarily mean there are two or more of the giant white rocks in the sky. What they actually mean is Earth has pulled in small asteroids that are now caught in its orbit. On occasion, these minimoons can fall into Earth’s atmosphere, producing a fireball as they do. And experts believe they have captured a small rock falling into our planet from space. A team from the Curtin University in Australia established six cameras across hundreds of kilometres which monitor fireballs in the Australian outback. Using the cameras, the researchers were able to determine that one fireball, which hit on August 22, 2016, was a minimoon. The team were able to determine this by analysing the rock’s relatively slow velocity – 11 kilometres per second (6.8 miles per second). The speed of the asteroid suggests it had been orbiting...
