Re-reviewing Google's Pixel 3a XL, one of the best sub-£500 smartphones of 2019, 6 months after the launch and with Android 10 on-board. From that dependable 12.2MP camera to the brilliant battery life, there's loads to love about the Pixel 3a XL. Here's why you should consider it over most rivals, even though it lacks the performance of rivals like the OnePlus 7T and Nubia Z20.
First up, the photo quality from that single-lens camera is still divine. Even tricky HDR conditions and night shots aren't a hassle, despite the culling of the Pixel ISP. Of all the phones I've reviewed in 2019, this is still the best for the money.
Of course you also get a stock version of Google's latest Android 10 OS, complete with loads of great new features. The dark mode and gesture navigation are welcome additions, and you'll get the Android 11 update come 2020.
Battery life is still a winner too, helped along by that energy-efficient OS. The Pixel 3a XL sports a bigger battery than the standard model, so you're guaranteed all-day play. And while the performance is limited by the Snapdragon 630 platform, I find that PubG Mobile still plays well all this time later.
