Iran has acknowledged it had exceeded the limit set on its low-enriched uranium stockpiles by a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, its first major breach of the agreement a year after the US unilateral withdrawal.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday that the US sanctions have effectively prevented Iran from selling excessive its uranium, as the agreement allows it to do.
He called on Tehran to "show restraint, not yield to emotions" and observe the provisions of the deal.
Speaking at a joint briefing with visiting Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney, Lavrov urged the European Union (EU) to make good on its pledge and finally implement a working system protecting its trade with Iran from US sanctions.
Coveney said the EU worked hard to protect JCPOA despite the US position which made it very difficult.
