Firefighters and several bystanders gathered near the burned building of the Kyoto Animation studio in the Japanese city of Uji, after a suspected arson attack earlier on Thursday left at least 33 dead and dozens injured, as media reports citing Kyoto officials.

Footage shows several people outside the cordoned off burnt-out building watching as the emergency services were seen operating at the scene.

"Today, the company in which my friend works was on fire. Many people got injured. When I came here and looked around, I thought it was a disaster," said one of the bystanders.

Reports suggest a 41-year old man entered the Kyoto Animation Co. studio, at 10:30 local time (01:30 GMT) and poured a flammable liquid, suspected to be petrol, in several parts of the building before lighting it on fire.

The perpetrator, who was also injured, has been taken into police custody.

The company's headquarters is located in a residential area of Uji, a city to the south of Kyoto that forms part of the Greater Kyoto area.
