A Texas high school made the news for all the wrong reasons. Was it because of bullying? Or because the students were being bad and acting up? Nope, it actually had nothing to do with the school’s students and everything to do with one of the science teachers. And now that teacher appears to be in some serious trouble, because parents and students are looking at them a little suspiciously. So, what happened exactly? It all started because of a homework question. That’s right, there’s been a lot of drama and commotion surrounding the school, and it all comes down to a question that was given to the students. And no, it wasn’t what’s two plus two? It was a question that had a lot more serious connotations than that, and parents are definitely mad.

Normally when you hear about complaints about homework, it’s the kids who are doing the complaining. No one wants to come home from a long day of school just to do some homework, but this time around, it’s the parents who aren’t just shocked at the kind of homework that was given to their children – they’re outraged. A lot of parents are stating the homework given was beyond wrong and inappropriate, and they want action taken as soon as possible.

So, what was the homework? What was so bad that it had parents actually making complaints and speaking to the news? Well, it was all because of one question. One biology question. A biology question that centred around… rape. Yes, that’s right, these students were given an actual science question based on sexual assault. This is the question they were given, and keep in mind that they were given no proper warning about it: “Suzy was assaulted in an alley and is a victim of rape. The police collected a sample of sperm that was left at the crime scene and now have three suspects in custody. Which of the suspects raped Suzy?” The question continued, with students being asked to match the DNA to the sample found at the scene of the crime by using matching skills. While this was all about biology at the end of the day, parents were still baffled how such a question could be given to a bunch of kids.

Talk about inappropriate. It really isn’t surprising that these parents were horrified by this question, especially since almost one hundred students were given this assignment. It has caused a ruckus in the school’s local community, with parents wondering if the question is part of some planned curriculum. According to the school district, that particular question did not get a tick of approval, so it’s kind of a mystery as to why it’s been included.
A lot of parents labelled the homework as completely and utterly appalling, so it has since been removed from classrooms. Do you think it’s an appropriate question for students? Or were parents just being overly dramatic when asking for the assignment to be removed?
