How Medieval & Renaissance Swords Were Gripped (Sometimes!): Sabre Grip Most medieval swords were gripped in a form of hammer or 'handshake' grip, most of the time. In the Renaissance the finger-ring and thumb-ring grips started to predominate. But right across this period there is another form of gripping which often gets overlooked: the so-called 'sabre' grip.
