Should Sir Keir Starmer step aside to ensure a woman wins the Labour leadership race? Labour leadership candidate Emily Thornberry said having a woman at the top of the party would be an "advantage" in the contest because Prime Minister Boris Johnson has a "woman problem".

She pointed out that Labour now has more women MPs than male representatives in Parliament, and said she is the candidate who would "frighten the life out of" Mr Johnson at future Prime Minister's Questions.

Jess Phillips has abandoned her bid to become Labour's next leader as she admitted she would not be able to bring the party together after its "cataclysmic" election defeat.

Rebecca Long-Bailey has said she would take Labour in "completely different directions" to Jeremy Corbyn amid criticism that she is the continuity candidate in the leadership race.

The shadow business secretary dismissed claims the outgoing leader and his allies would still run the party if she won, and said it was "disrespectful" to say she is another version of Mr Corbyn.

Labour peer Lord Charlie Falconer spoke with Julia Hartley-Brewer.
