A dozen brave Orthodox Christian worshippers jumped into Nafplio's icy January sea to retrieve a crucifix thrown in by Metropolitan Nektarios of Argolis as part of Epiphany celebrations being held all over the world on Monday.

The men can be seen jumping into the sea after the clergyman threw the crucifix, and then kissing his hand in respect after coming back on shore. A Holy Mass was held by Metropolitan Nektarios of Argolis before the dive and was attended by local authorities.

Racing for the cross is a traditional ceremony held by the Orthodox community internationally, as part of Epiphany celebrations. Aside from celebrating Epiphany, participants believe that catching the religious icon of the cross will bring health and strength in the New Year.
