Engine Additives Buying Guide | Halfords UK Looking to improve the performance and efficiency of your engine? In this guide we take you through the different types of engine additives and how to select the right one for your car. [Halfords. We Fit. We Service. We Repair.]

The engine additives we’ll cover in this guide are designed to improve the performance and efficiency of your engine.

A couple of things to watch out for with all these additives is that you get the right one for your petrol, diesel or hybrid fuel system.

They’re specially formulated for each engine type. Also, note the size of your fuel tank, as the recommended amount is generally for an average tank of 50 litres.

If your tank is bigger or smaller, you may need to adjust the dose.

Some additives are designed to be used in different areas of the vehicle……so always read the instructions to ensure you are pouring the product into the correct location.

System Cleaners, like these from Redex and Wynn’s are available for all types of engine.

You add them to a tank, and they clean the fuel system which can reduce emissions, restore performance and improve the engine life.

If you feel your car is running sluggishly, or want to protect it in the long term, they’re worth a try.

There are also complete system cleaners for petrol and diesel engines that intensively clean the engine to safely remove harmful deposits.

These reduce emissions – which can help you pass your MOT or NCT.

They can also boost power too. The manufacturers recommend that you use them every 3,000 miles.

You’ve also got performance boosters like this. These additives increase the cetane or octane rating of the petrol or diesel you put in the tank.

This boosts combustion to improve power and maximise performance.

For diesel cars, there’s Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner.

The DPF gets clogged up over time, especially if you make lots of shorts trips.

You’ll want to try this is if your DPF light comes on. The manufacturers recommend also using it every 2-3 tanks.

It lowers the temperature that the soot in the system burns at, meaning it burns away more quickly.

This makes DPF regeneration a quicker and easier process, and hopefully prevents costly repairs.

If you’re lucky enough to run a classic car, one that’s designed to use leaded petrol, using unleaded can damage the engine and reduce power.

Lead Replacement should be used every tank – it lubricates and protects the valve seats and maintains engine performance so that your classic stays on the road.

You’ll find the full range of additives online and in-store, and if you have any questions ask one of our in-store experts.
