Didier Reynders: It is very important to define some priorities about justice during this presidency

Didier Reynders: It is very important to define some priorities about justice during this presidency It is the first informal meeting during the Croatian Presidency so we are quite (unintelligible) to organise such an inauguration during the presidency. But it will be very important to try to define some priorities about justice during this presidency. One of the priorities is to prepare the installation of the new prosecutor's office at the European level. Mrs Kövesi, Chief Prosecutor will be with us today and we will discuss about the preparatory work to be sure that at the end of the year, the 1st of November, we'll have a new instrument, the prosecutor's office, at the European level. For the rest of course we will discuss the best ways to organise a good cooperation in the justice field in civil, commercial, or criminal justice. It's very important to listen to the different ideas coming from the different member states to enhance the capacity to modernise the justice, to go to a e-justice but also to facilitate the cooperation among the different justice systems.

It will be discussed but you know that this is more an issue for the General Affairs Council first where I've made state of play in the Council and in the Parliament. But I try also to have a better involvement of justice concerning the rule of law issues because the first concern is always the dependence of the judiciary. So it's logical that we ask to the Justice Minister to be more involved in such a way. So I will prepare the new mechanism, the new annual report on the rule of law, and we will continue the process with article 7. I've asked the Croatian Presidency to continue to put it on the agenda. But with the new mechanism it will be interesting to listen to the different proposals coming from the Minister of Justice because again, if you start with a discussion about the independence of the judiciary it's quite normal to be in touch with the Minister of Justice. But of course I will have also some bilaterals to discuss the situation specifically in different member states.
