Delicate An Exploration of Light and Sound

Delicate An Exploration of Light and Sound A student project for Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design 4D Design: Still to Motion course.

Photography, Audio, Story and Editing by Heidi Bell

"Delicate," constructed and filmed in my rather nondescript residential photo studio (otherwise known as our basement), is an installation artwork to explore the intensity of light sources to objects and the shadows the combinations create. The installation intends to transform the existing space. The scene involves two reclaimed oversized painter’s canvas frames suspended from a heavy-duty backdrop rig against a black backdrop to block the immediate surroundings. White paper covers the frames, and hand-cut snowflakes are suspended with fishing line across the array at various heights and distances from the surface. Two strings of small decorative lights are draped behind the frames, and a string of capped decorative lights is suspended overhead creating a canopy of sorts. Seven LED lights mounted on stands are situated adjacent to the array and adjusted to various heights. Each unit is outfitted with a different colored gel. A small oscillating fan provides air movement. Wind chimes and jingle bells and seaglass combined in a glass bowl make up the sound tracks.
Viewers are free to examine the installation up close while standing, kneeling, or lying down.

Although the full setup is a bit clunky when viewed in its entirety, the delicate paper snowflakes and dancing colored shadows are beautiful when explored from a close distance.
