Unfortunately, almost all of the parliament’s 751 members decided to leave the EU Parliament in France early and to use their Thursday afternoon to travel back home.
Only a dozen MEPs turned up to the debate in an almost completely empty chamber.
EU Parliament pays, next to the monthly wage, an additional flat-rate allowance of €323 to cover accommodation and related costs for each day that MEPs are present in Brussels or Strasbourg on official business, provided that they sign a register to attest their presence.
The allowance covers hotel bills, meals and all other expenses involved.
The allowance is reduced by half, if MEPs miss more than half the roll-call votes on days when plenary votes are held, even if they have been present and signed the attendance register.
One of most common habits of MEPs is that, on a Thursday, they stay till noon for casting their vote and then leave as quickly as possible. Also today.
Bulgarian MEP Angel Dzhambazki dismantled his colleagues.
