Why I hate saying 'Show, don't tell' and what we should say instead

The first in a series, here is my hot take on why the advice "Show, don't tell" is frustratingly inadequate, ignorant of the true writing issues at hand, and what we should thinking about instead.

Like all things in writing, advice needs balance. There are positive take-aways from almost any writing tip out there. I recognize that "Show, don't tell" has helped many people. I am also aware of how many writers it has confused and lead down a path of misdirection. My perspective comes from my own experience as a writer, freelance editor, and student of the craft. I welcome all comments so that we can expand on the thoughts I present and create educational dialogue to help others!
