Malaysia has received an offer from Russia to exchange some Russian-made fighter planes for new fighter planes. This was stated by Defense Minister Mohamad Sabu after being confirmed in parliament. Sabu said the government was considering an offer from Moscow, but said the priority of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) at the moment was the procurement of reconnaissance aircraft and light attack aircraft. Sabu also said Malaysia would not consider buying a new multirole fighter until 2030.
RMAF currently operates around 18 Su-30MKM warplanes sent from 2007. The Air Force has also just stopped operating 10 units of MiG-29 fighter jets operating since the mid-1990s.
When asked in parliament, is Malaysia willing to accept the Russian government's offer to buy back 28 fighter jets and "replace them with new aircraft - which may be new Su-35 or MiG-35 variants - which might also involve bartering with Malaysian palm oil ... Sabu said that although the acquisition of multirole warplanes was not in the Ministry of Defense plan, he was still examining the Russian government's offer.
The Sabu Minister added that in line with the RMAF's long-term modernization program, he would continue to prioritize maintaining the Su-30MKM fighter jets and eight F-18 Hornet fighter jets obtained in the late 1990s. This sustainability priority will continue until 2030.
According to Sabu, short-term procurement priorities for the RMAF are maritime patrol aircraft (MPA), MALE aircraft (medium altitude, long durability) and light combat aircraft (LCA / FLIT - light combat aircraft / combat leader? In trainers) to complete capabilities and readiness of the Malaysian Air Force.
