Log and Timber 'Salt Box' dormer on our 'off the grid' cabin (part 1)

Log and Timber 'Salt Box' dormer on our 'off the grid' cabin (part 1) When I first framed the log rafters on this section over the loft we weren't going to raise it ...only place a skylight in the center...but after my wife and I saw the beautiful view we decided to make a "salt box" style dormer here...more head space for sure...and and opens up opportunitys for more windows and views...

All the roof boards and logs get 2 coats of penofin oil to seal and protect...not to mention bring out their natural beauty.

I harvested all these logs myself when I was doing mitigation work in park and jefferson counties...central colorado between I-70 and 285...from around 9,000 feet elevation...this is all slow growth lodgepole pine that got hit by the xyps beetle...all the trees I kept for logs were dead standing for 7 to 10 years...a super straight and very strong species...some aged up to 200 years old...so the "carbon footprint" of our place is very small indeed...something we really like.

I hope you enjoy this....more videos to come making the windows, doors, cabinets ,skylights and related trim on all the fixed panel windows.

All the best.. st
