Do you struggle with arm tingling, numbness, or burning? Here is a great massage for the scalene muscles on the side of the neck that could contribute to a condition called thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). Obviously, arm tingling, numbness, or burning can be the result of nerve compression in the neck (disc injury, fractures, spurs, etc). There is no harm in massaging these muscles on the side of the neck to see if you get some relief.
Spend about 1 minute massaging these muscles with a ball (against the wall or doorway) or stick (as shown in the video). If you use a stick, you can just put a towel over the end of it so that it doesn’t aggravate the skin. Apply super gentle pressure here. There is no need to dig into your neck as hard as possible… this can be counterproductive and cause you to tighten up and guard even more. Make sure that you are breathing the entire time. If you find yourself holding your breath, you are likely pushing too hard. Less pressure is more here.
As Mike mentions, shallow chest breaths can contribute to scalene tightness. Stress, constant sitting, and lack of exercise can contribute to chest, neck, and pelvic floor tightness. Learning to take pull, slow, relaxed diaphragmatic and chest breaths is an incredible way to release tension in the body. Spend some time meditating to help relieve that tension.
