Great, Russia Launches an Icebreaker Warship for Patrol in the Arctic

Great, Russia Launches an Icebreaker Warship for Patrol in the Arctic Russia launches Ivan Papanin's new class of ice destroyers on St. Petersburg. The 8,500-tonne ship will serve to defend Russian interests in the Arctic region.

The latest addition to the Russian Arctic military warehouse was launched last Friday at the Admiralty Shipyard. Dubbed the icebreaker by some Russian media, it has a newer design made for the Russian Navy. In its role and size, this warship is said to be comparable to Norwegian coast guard Svalbard.

the Ivan Papanin manufacturing project began in April 2017 and the ship is expected to be commissioned around 2022 or 2023. The 114 meter long warship can be used as a patrol boat, tugboat or icebreaker for other ships. Its stomach is strong enough to face ice 50cm thick.

The ship is armed with Kalibr cruise missiles and 76.2mm naval weapons. The ship also has helipad facilities, with hangars for reconnaissance helicopters and bays for two Raptor class speedboats. Ivan Papanin also has a capacity for 50 crew, in addition to the sailors and officers who manage the ship themselves, and has a 60-day endurance, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

The Russian military plans to use the multipurpose ship to patrol its Arctic waters. Intercepted offenders can be pulled into the port to be detained without external assistance. Ivan Papanin can also function as a transportation ship for sensitive military cargo or as a support ship in battle groups.

The Russian Navy already has the Ilya Muromets icebreaker which has been operating since last year. But the ship was unarmed.
