Christopher Ornelas recalled witnessing the "frightening" shooting outside the Cinergy entertainment complex in Odessa, just hours after the suspect of Saturday’s series of shootings in the West Texas towns of Odessa and Midland, who killed five people and injured 21 more, was shot dead by police.
“My wife and I were in the bedroom here getting ready to go out and as we were getting ready I heard what sounded like fireworks popping off excessively loudly. So I said: I wonder who is popping fireworks, I came to this window, opened the window, immediately saw fire trucks, the DPS, all the local authorities and policemen, they were racing this way. What I could also see too was a lot of bodies lying behind the theatre. Later we found out that they were taking cover, they were not any of the victims but it was really frightening,” Ornelas said.
"We now know is kind of this was the end of this situation, that that was apparently the only shooter and they killed him in the van. We were still just becoming aware that there was possibly other shooters in multiple locations," Ornelas added, and said that he hopes residents "can get some more questions answered as to why did this happen and who all was involved."
Midland police stated on their Facebook page that the “active shooter was shot and killed at the Cinergy in Odessa. There is no active shooter at this time. All agencies are investigating reports of possible suspects.” Police later stated that the incident started with a traffic stop, and that the deceased shooter was a white male in his mid-30s.
Earlier, Midland police stated they believed there were two shooters in two separate vehicles.
