Irish media report that Ireland's Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has had informal discussions with British ministers about possible alternatives to the backstop. Meanwhile the European Union is still awaiting formal proposals from the UK. “We await written proposals from the UK side. We simply haven’t seen any written proposals to date,” Mr Coveney said this afternoon. However, he also revealed that there are significant informal contacts on the shape of a possible new deal.
“I’ve met UK's Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay, I’ve met UK's foreign secretary Dominic Raab, I’ve spoken to no-deal planning minister Michael Gove at length, I meet and speak with Northern Secretary Julian Smith on a regular basis, we had dinner last night in Dublin and spoke for two or three hours,” Mr Coveney told reporters this afternoon.
“So of course there are conversations, as you would expect, exploring concepts, what might work, what won’t work,” he said.
Also today Ireland's Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney updated the Dáil.
