Misinformation after mass shootings: PolitiFact explains how to suss out the real from the fake

In the hours after mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, hoaxes and rumors started spreading on platforms like Facebook, Reddit and Twitter. PolitiFact's Katie Sanders and Aaron Sharockman decided to sit down and talk about the hoaxes we're fact-checking and debunking on social media around gun violence. Some users said police had thwarted shooting attempts in other cities, while others claimed — without evidence — that the killings were a "false flag" operation planned by leftists and the media.
