NACo 2019 - Drug Positive Infant Protocol

NACo 2019 - Drug Positive Infant Protocol Newborns who are born with drugs in their system are extremely vulnerable to child maltreatment and, in New Hanover County, there was an increasing number of infants born drug positive. So the county’s Department of Social Services implemented a Drug Positive Infant Protocol in September 2016 to provide a uniform Child Protective Services (CPS) response, which incorporates increased supervisory oversight, increased child and family contact and increased community partner collaboration. Since this protocol was implemented, New Hanover County has provided enhanced CPS service to 237 infants and families.
