The two species of pear trees are Asian pear (Pyrus serotina) and European pear (Pyrus communis). Most pear trees need cross-pollination from nearby pollen sources of common trees, but some pear trees usually do not need cross-pollinators to produce fruit because they are self-fruitful.
Pears typically produce the first fruits three years after planting, although they won't produce a full crop for five to seven years. Dwarf trees usually produce fruit a bit earlier than standard-size trees.
