Top 15 US States in Manufacturing

A 'bar chart race' comparison for GDP (Gross Domestic Product) from Manufacturing of the top 15 U.S. States from 1963 to 2018 (Q4). All data was sourced from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), a U.S. government agency that provides official macroeconomic and industry statistics. The data is presented in current (Q4 2018) dollars. The total U.S. GDP and total U.S. GDP from Manufacturing is also displayed for context.

*Note: The data comes from two separate BEA data sets. The SIC data set covers the period from 1963 to 1996 while the NAISC data set covers the period from 1997 to 2018. The SIC data may be less reliable as it was based on different standards but still provides data that allows us to contextualize the size of the manufacturing industry in each state.

Additional Info: GDP is a measure of the total value of goods produced and services provided in a country during one year. It is Essentially the size of a countries economy. This comparison looks at only the manufacturing component of GDP and thus represents the size of the manufacturing industry in each state.
