Advanced non-surgical heart procedure (TAVR) saves elderly’s life

Advanced non-surgical heart procedure (TAVR) saves elderly’s life 72 year-old Narendra Singh Arora was brought to Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai after having experienced breathlessness for over four months and developing swelling in his legs. On examination it was found that the patient had suffered from a heart failure, was suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and had an acute kidney injury.
While in cases such as these the common course of treatment often involves open heart surgery, the patient’s condition made it a high-risk option.
Fortunately, an advanced procedure known as Transcatheter aortic valve implantation or TAVI came to his rescue. In conventional open heart surgery the chest cavity needs to be opened by cutting through the sternum to allow the surgeon to operate on the heart, TAVR or TAVI is a non-surgical technique where heart valves are replaced via needle-puncture of the skin, rather than a scalpel. Untreated valve disease can lead to a shortened lifespan and TAVI can increase the patient’s life between 8 to 9 years.
Dr. Rahul Gupta, Consultant Cardiology, assisted by a team of experts, successfully performed this procedure on the patient and discharged him within a few days.
