Scientists conduct necropsy of juvenile humpback whale along Turnagain Arm

Scientists conduct necropsy of juvenile humpback whale along Turnagain Arm The body of a dead juvenile humpback whale washed ashore in Turnagain Arm just past Girdwood along the Seward Highway on Monday. Scientists say the whale may have followed fish or beluga whales into the arm and wasn’t able to turn back. The whale beached close to the Seward Highway, so the animal won’t go to waste and its blubber will be used by members of various Alaska Native groups. The location also enables biologists access for collecting tissue and organ samples.
