There are some things among drummers that are universal. The pinky out issue is one of them. Somewhere in our development, we go through this issue. And if you haven't ever dealt with this, good on you. The rest of us humans are just out here trying to survive ;^)
Every student I have ever had, every drummer I have ever talked to about it, and I myself have gone through the issue of playing with your pinky out. I can't tell you the number of times I've yelled "pinky!" over a student playing through an exercise. Correcting it can take a long time. Why is this such a universal issue among drummers???
More importantly, why should you NOT do this? Why does it hinder your playing?
I was always told not to do this, but I was never given the reason WHY. So in this quick video, I will give you my own thoughts on why you shouldn't allow the pinky out grip to stick around.
